Exhaust System Also Affects Vehicle Performance

29 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Vehicle performance do not solely rely on the the engine, an efficient exhaust system is also needed. For the famous car companies like Cadillac and BMW, good looking and luxurious cars are just not enough. Their products also require quality performance. To achieve this performance, they would need an optimum exhaust.

A vehicle’s exhaust system is a series of pipes and tubings where each component is responsible with different tasks. These tubings are used to guide waste exhaust gases away from a controlled combustion inside an engine. There is also a manifold, which is an assembly designed to collect the exhaust gas from two or more cylinders into one pipe. After that is the header, which is an improved manifold. It is designed to perform well in collecting the exhaust gases that the manifold did not collect. Headers are generally steel pipes with bends and folds so all the exhaust gases arrive at the same time. After that a catalytic converter will come into action. Cadillac catalytic converter and BMW catalytic converter are designed to lessen the harmful elements in the exhaust before they are released into the air.

To do this effectively, car engines carefully control the amount of fuel they burn. They try to keep the air to fuel ratio very close to the stoichiometric point, which is the ideal calculation. It is up to the Cadillac catalytic converters and
BMW Catalytic Converter to help reduce emission toxicity. Today, most catalytic converters are three-way catalytic converters. The term ‘three way’ refers to the three regulated emissions Cadillac Catalytic Converter and BMW catalytic converter help to reduce, which are carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbons or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and Nitrogen oxides (NOx) molecules. A catalytic converter is a great innovation that is designed to help reduce air pollution.

Just like in most modern cars, there are three stages in the Cadillac catalytic converter and BMW catalytic converter. The first stage is The reduction catalyst, where platinum and rhodium are used to help reduce the Nitrogen oxides emissions. In the second stage or oxidization catalyst, the catalytic converter reduces the unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by burning them over a platinum and palladium catalyst. The final stage is a control system that monitors the exhaust stream. It also here where the information is used to control the fuel injection system.

Gm Unveil Its Second Variant E-flex System at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show

29 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

General Motors with its continuing commitment in developing transportation that reduces oil use and promotes energy diversity has extended its reach at the Shanghai Auto Show 2007 with the debut of its next iteration of the E-Flex electric architecture, configured with GM?s newest and most efficient hydrogen fuel cell system.

The E-Flex system make use of General Motors new fifth-generation fuel cell propulsion technology and a lithium-ion battery that provides it with up to 300 miles (483 km) of petroleum- and emissions-free electric driving. It?s also equipped with auto components that are designed to enhance performance while reducing harmful emissions such as gm mufflers.

The fuel cell E-Flex is a true zero emission vehicle that operates all-electric from both hydrogen fuel cell-generated electricity and grid electricity. It is plug-in capable which adds up to 20 additional miles or 34 km each time it is charges therefore reducing frequent trips to refueling station. The E-Flex system is a flexible all-electric production vehicle architecture that can be made to run on electricity from a number of sources. It has made its first appearance last January at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in the Chevrolet Volt concept vehicle. The Chevrolet Volt is a battery electric vehicle that can travel 40 miles on electricity and make use of a small bio-fuel engine with a generator to extend its range to 640 miles (1030 km).

According to Larry Burns, GM?s Vice-President of Research and Development and Strategic Planning, “The beauty of our E-Flex strategy is that it allows us to package various propulsion systems into the same space depending on what energy is available locally. It also provides flexibility in the sources of energy. We can obtain hydrogen or electricity from a myriad of renewable sources – wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biofuels – or from traditional sources such as natural gas, clean coal, nuclear or even gasoline. E-Flex provides flexibility in two ways: in the propulsion systems that can be used, and in the sources of energy that can be commercialized to compete with oil and meet global transportation growth in a sustainable way.”

Based on some independent studies hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer superior overall efficiency and fewer greenhouse gas emissions as compared to internal combustion engines running on gasoline, considering both the creation of the energy and its use in the vehicle.

The fifth-generation fuel cell system used on the second variant E-Flex system is half the size of its predecessor but provides the same power and performance. The fourth generation presently powers the Chevrolet Sequel concept vehicle. The Chevrolet Sequel is capable of storing 8 kg of hydrogen and delivers a range of 300 miles (483 km). Likewise, the fuel cell Volt will also deliver 300 miles of range, but with only 4.0 kg of hydrogen (75 miles / kg).

GM’s advancements in terms of its eco-friendly vehicles show that our fuel cell technology has the potential to be a competitive alternative to the internal combustion engine in terms of size, performance, durability and cost. Burns said, “Our progress has made us increasingly confident that our fuel cell propulsion system will be automotive-competitive. But before this technology can be made widely available— governments, energy suppliers, and infrastructure companies around the world need to collaborate with GM and the auto industry to develop a market for fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen fuel.”

A variety of technological advancements and lightweight materials have contributed to the efficiency of the Volt. It has an estimated curb weight of 3,500 pounds (1,588 kg) and weighs 30 percent less than the Chevrolet Sequel. Moreover its fuel cell propulsion system is placed entirely under the hood and is equivalent in size to a four-cylinder engine with automatic transmission. The Volt also features molded GE plastic panels on the fenders, instrument panel, window glazings, and steering wheel that provides between 30 percent to 50 percent weight reductions per part.

The E-Flex fuel cell variant also showcases GM’s third-generation wheel hub motors, packed inside the rear wheel that adds considerable torque power for all-wheel electric drive capability. Likewise, its new coreless motor technology reduces mass and increases its power surpassing the first generation shown in 2003.

General Motors is also taking its energy diversity technology to its range of trucks starting off with the development of truck components such as gmc muffler that reduces harmful emissions. These eco-friendly gmc mufflers are to be equipped on all GM trucks as part of the automaker?s drive in helping preserve the planet.

Yates Racing Remains Loyal to Ford

29 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Nextel Cup team Robert Yates Racing has confirmed that it will continue to work with Ford the maker of Ford Focus performance parts for the next few years after Ford Racing Technology has assured that it has signed another contract with the team for the next five years.

Yates has been the subject of much speculation this year as it had suggested that they were working on a deal to power the DEI cars next year. Other teams that were working on with the Dodge power were reported to have approached Yates to have their engines built by them.

However Yates despite the fact that they have gone through some difficult period recently has promised to remain loyal to Ford. The team has been working with the Blue Oval Company for the past 19 years, and was able to achieve 57 NASCAR Nextel Cup wins with one championship in 1999 with Dale Jarrett.

At present RYR is handling two Ford Fusions in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series for David Gilliland and Ricky Rudd, while Stephen Leicht pilots the squad?s lone Busch Series entry.

Team founder Robert Yates said, “For Ford to come up and support us when we’re not having our best days is really a great feeling. They’re not turning their back on us. They’re offering us plenty of help to get this deal turned around, certainly with engineering support, so we appreciate everybody at Ford, everybody that works on them and everybody that buys them. I’m very appreciative of having this deal. We?re happy about this being done because there was speculation out there that we didn’t have anything or that we were looking elsewhere. It wasn’t true, but it’s hard to quiet your critics, especially when your competition is trying to shoot you down, so I want to thank Ford for being loyal to us.”

The last race where the team has won a race was at Talladega in the year 2005 with Dale Jarrett and continued to show that their powerful engines by sweeping the front row at the Daytona 500 this year and by putting David Gilliland on the front row at Talladega last April.

Installing Exhaust Fans

29 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Exhaust Fans are ventilations that inhibit moisture buildup and growth of airborne pollutants. Installing them in your homes can save cost on maintenance.

An exhaust fan is one of the most useful home appliances that let you save both in energy and money. It not only offers ventilation, but can significantly prevent excess moisture buildup and amassing of indoor airborne pollutants, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. There are basically three types of exhaust fans: attic, bathroom, and window exhaust fans.

A bathroom exhaust fan is very important for home ventilation systems. It does not only lessen offensive odors, but also conveys large amount of humid air to the exterior of our home. A bathroom exhaust fan has more featured accessories than the other two types of exhaust fans. Accessories include fans, lights, timers, nightlights, and heaters.

Shop for an exhaust fan that is suited to your home. Invest on a unit that is powerful enough for the room where you will set it up. You can ask the salesperson to determine the size of the fan you will need relative to the size of the room.

An exhaust fan needs to be properly installed for it to function well and efficiently. Installing bathroom fans, for instance, usually only take a few hours to complete. In performing the installation process, you should unplug the power from the circuit prior to starting your work. Lock the circuit so no one can accidentally turn it on while installing. Take away any insulation on the ceiling where you intend to set up the unit. And if you want to change a light fixture with a fan unit, detach the original fixture and cut off all the electrical connections.

It is much better to position the ventilation housing in the spot that will let you secure it straight to the ceiling beam. But if the original light fixture arrangement makes this impossible, you can put wooden braces between beams or joists to enable firm connection for the housing. Hold the housing firmly and mark around the perimeter to define your cut. Make punctures in the corners. Cut along the lines and fix firmly the fan housing in place.

Extend a cable from the existing light knob all the way to the unit. You can utilize a cable of three wires if you would like to split the switch of your light and your exhaust fan. Strictly follow the wiring diagram in the manual, lest you create power shortage in your house.

Connect the ground wire to the clip integrated on the housing. Press on the wires inside the wiring box portion then put the cover. From the fan housing, attach the duct. After that, put in the cover of the unit inside the bathroom. And, from the existing electrical circuit at the wall switch, wire the cable.

Exhaust fans are easy to install. Most units come with manuals anyway when purchased. But safety is always priority. For any doubts, it is best to call a technician to help you.

H4: the Smallest Hummer to Arrive in 2010

29 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

The Hummer is the result of General Motor?s quest to come up with a vehicle that could rival the iconic Jeep brand of Chrysler. Compared to other automakers the growth of General Motors? Hummer brand is measured in pounds shed and inches lost as oppose to the usual increase in dimensions. But although this is the trend for the Hummer it still make sure that it maintains quality throughout the range by utilizing only quality auto components such as flowmaster muffler which includes Hummer brand mufflers.

The H1 which is the original Hummer, possess military heritage combined with technology and combat-proven durability. Although it was considered as an army?s general best friend in duty it was still too big for urban use. After the H1 came H2. It was made smaller than the H1 but still considered enormous for urban dwellers.

Then came, the H3 which is further reduced in size as compared to its H2 brother but despite the size reduction it still takes up road space as compared to that of a Toyota Camry. But according to some sources inside GM, the automaker is developing a new Hummer that?s smaller as compared to its predecessors.

The new Hummer will obviously be called H4 and designed to target the compact and crossover segment. According to Hummer?s general manager Martin Walsh, the H4 is going to be paired in development with another GM product. Walsh said during an interview with GoAuto, ?Our growth will be downwards in terms of size . . . opportunities will lie in smaller segments.?

General Motors has not yet released any statement on whether the production of the H4 will be made into a global effort but judging by GM?s desire to market the Hummer as a global brand it is not a remote possibility that Holden or Opel may also be involved in the project.

However there is one issue that the brand will have to face when it comes to the H4 and it?s in term of its design which somehow softens its hard-core image. And if ever Hummer would decide to use a monocoque chassis and independent suspension, which mostly customers prefer since it provides better comfort and more car-like road holding, the brand would face backlash from Hummer enthusiasts as well as the off-roading community similar to what Jeep experienced when it launched the Dodge Caliber-based Compass.

In addition, a company insider said that in order for the automaker to maintain the strong image of the Hummer, the H4 would be made to ride on a separate chassis, showcasing a different approach, breakover and departure angles with copious amounts of ground clearance. The H4 will also possess some of the vital Hummer design cues. With the H4 made smaller, more efficient, and more affordable, Hummer predicts that it could sell between 30,000 and 40,000 units which are rather low considering the fact that Hummer sold almost 70,000 vehicles in 2006.

Hummer also plans to expand their H3 product range. And in addition to selling the current model globally with right-hand drive and diesel powertrain options, it is expected that an ?SUT? truck version will also arrive next year. This is a smart idea, considering that the H3 wagon is based on GM’s compact Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon pickups.

Insiders further say that it will initially be offered as a four-door crew-cab, and will be followed by a regular or extended cab, which would help the Hummer brand to gain a new market and access to the compact pickup arena. General Motors have opted to invest greatly in the Hummer brand a few years back, and with its expansion to smaller vehicles that are better suited to non-North American markets and environmentally conscious buyers, its investments are finally paying off.
