I need a new muffler for a 12hp lawn tractor and cannot find an exact replacement part. What are the constraints that I should consider when looking for a generic replacement muffler? Obviously, the engine block outlet features need to match, but what about things like muffler volume, etc? Are there any key characteristics that I should look for?

As long as your outlet on the block matches up I would make sure your replacement muffler is similar to your old, it doesn`t have to match exactly but make sure you have clearance around heat sensitive items like wires and so forth. A small engine repair shop should have a good generic replacement for you. Just be sure to bring your old one with you. Heck they might even have an old one laying around and will give it to you or sell it to you dirt cheap.
