What is better for street car and everday use? Is a supercharger better for muscle cars and drag cars and is a turbocharger better for imports and track cars? Which charger would you prefer?

Superchargers are an instant boost of power, turbos boost as the engine makes more exhaust. Superchargers have less chance of having problems, and easier to install.

Misha is right……superchargers run much cooler….more dependable……i think a turbo gets to hot…around 600 degrees……supercharger is the better all around choice

fit both many car makers do now.

Be More Specific. Make Model Year you ask simple questions and expect actual answers is it a Chevy is it newer if so they have kits all over the place now if it is a `Hemi dodge they are out there but are not as popular. Remember a supercharger draws upwards of 50 hp to generate the extra power where as the restriction presented by a properly sized and designed turbo system can be as little as one horsepower therfore turbos are harder to install with all their support equipment (intercooler, oil feed, plumbing) but are much more efficient.

The design of the car and use better dictates the power adder.
December 6th, 2009 at 3:01 amFor every day use, i’d recommend a supercharger…it doesn’t have the lag associated with turbocharging.
the downside is that supercharging takes engine power to drive it….so it is about 60% efficient.
Turbocharging works off exhaust gas flow and has lag time. This is from the moment you step on the pedal to the time you reach maximum boost.
Turbo charging works off exaust gasses to drive the impeller….it is 90% efficient.
both lose power via parasitic loss via thermodynamics (heat loss) and mechanical friction.

Superchargers are normally not for everyday driving, they can eat fuel and are expensive to fix even due to wear. Turbo is better for highway driving and less wear and tear, buy a turbo that would fit your driving habits.

ok well turbocharging is better at higher rpms which in everyday driving wont affect drivability unless you hit boost usually at around 4k rpm. it gives you a nice power jump when you really want to. you can control if you want to hit it if you shift at low rpms and boost is very easy to manage. supercharging is better if you always want to have power like you are always making boost because it runs of the serpentine belt and has a very consitent and smooth power band. now supercharging doesnt require the use of an intercooler unlike turbocharging since it isnt in close contact to exaust gasses yet it is always nice to have some form of cooling such as alcohol injection.they are both great bang for buck power adders yet im a fan of turbocharging because it is very street drivable at low rpms and it gives me a great power boost at higher rpms

SC’s are indeed generally more common for muscle cars, while Turbochargers are generally used more in imports. SC’s have a better throttle response, with instant results. Turbo’s have gotten better, but they do have a slight lag compared to the response of the SC.
December 6th, 2009 at 4:39 amAnd its actually opposite of the first answer. Turbo’s perform better at higher RPM’s, while SC perform better at lower. SC’s.
I personally would go with the SC over the Turbo.

i run a vortech v2 supercharger on my 5.4 liter v8 bolted on standard engine gives me 436.2 rwhp.they are more reliable than turbos if a turbo blows heaps of stuff goes into the motor ending up costing you an engine rebuild &a new turbo and idling them down is a pain, a blower the belt goes and you only loose your blower power and you can still drive the car,you dont have to idle them down either.and a bearing might go in the unit 40 dollars to replace it ,i highly recommend a supercharger ive had turbos and i will never go back to them.good luck ..

Supercharger…………………

a turbocharger is exhaust gas driven, a supercharger needs a belt for automotive uses, but can also be exhaust gas driven( like the p-38 lockheed lightening from ww2) turbo’s usually are found on smaller imports to make up power not made from their small displacement engines, i would use a supercharger if oi had the money for a v-6 or a v8 engine, it will make you go real fast, a supercharger can develope over 100% hp gain , a turbo might make 50% increase, unless you use no2 ( nitrous)i hope this helped you

both are hard to maintain, but i would go with a turbo, turbos give u a lot of power on low rpms and superchargers tend to give u more power on higher rpms
