Bold Moves – Ford’s Urban Marketing Campaign

23 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Ford Motor Company had already caught the attention of millions of U.S. residents of different races especially African-Americans through Ford’s marketing campaign called “Bold Moves”.

The advertisement campaign started last May 2, when Ford came up with a 60-second advertisement aired on Fox TV’s American Idol. The ad features a new song from Season 1 winner and two-time Grammy Award winner Kelly Clarkson. The main initiative of the first “Bold Moves” marketing campaign was to call out the attention of urban customers by starting out with new Ford Fusion and Ford F150 advertisements entitled “Dance” that was premiered on Black Entertainment Television’s (BET) top rated 2006 BET Awards.

Marc Perry, Ford’s Multi-cultural Marketing Manager states: “Bold Moves focuses on the choices people make every day about how to live their lives. What we’re doing is putting a lens on that message to communicate with the various cultures that make up the United States.”

The “Bold Moves” advertisement campaign is a major part of Ford’s marketing plan called “Way Forward” which goal is to restore Ford’s market profitability in North America.

“When we started out on our Way Forward plan, our first step was a reassessment of what people think of us today. What are our weaknesses? What are our strengths? Our research confirmed for us what we knew in our hearts. Ford’s strength and identity are defined by three words: bold… American… and innovative.” said Marc Fields, Executive Vice President of Ford Motor Company.

Ford’s advertising partner Uniworld Group, which is an African-American marketing agency, had developed two “Bold Moves” campaign that features urban customers. The first commercial entitled “Dance: Bold Makes it Happen” is a 30-second TV advertisement that features the lifestyle of an urban Ford Fusion owner. Unfortunately, the commercial did not feature quality Ford parts such as Ford Mustang parts. The second one is a 30-second TV spot about a pick-up truck owner who wants to renovate an old barbershop with the help of his Ford F150 truck along with three other friends.

Bold Moves marketing campaign will continue in developing advertisements for new Ford vehicles and other Ford products such as the all-new 2007 Ford Shelby GT500, the 2007 Ford Expedition and Expedition EL, 2007 Ford Edge, and the 2007 Ford Fusion all-wheel-drive. In addition, Ford will also create marketing campaigns, which will target the Hispanic-American customers in North America.

2007 Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award Goes to Ford Family

22 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

The prestigious Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award, for the first time next year, will be given to an entire family and not to a single person. The Petersen Automotive Museum and Hotrod & Restoration have chosen the Ford family as the recipient of the award.

The awarding will coincide with the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Ford, one of the most influential vehicles from the automaker. The 1932 Ford, otherwise called Model B or Deuce coupe, is highly collectible these days. However, one should be prepared to pay thousands of dollars to restore its original style and appeal. Said vehicle played a significant role in giving birth to the hot rod era.

Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award is scheduled to be given to Edsel B. Ford II, chosen representative of the family, on the second day of March next year. Edsel B. Ford II is the great-grandson of Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company.

?There couldn’t be a more fitting family member to represent the Ford family than Edsel B. Ford II,” said Dick Messer, director of The Petersen Automotive Museum in a recent press release. “His grandfather, Edsel B. Ford (son of Henry Ford), oversaw the design of the 1932 Ford coupes and roadster, now nicknamed the ‘deuce’.” Those vehicles are the roots upon which the hot rod niche market has been built.”

]Robert E. Petersen, founder of The Petersen Automotive Museum and award namesake noted, “There couldn’t be a more appropriate time or appropriate place to honor the Ford family. The 1932 Ford roadster remains the most popular body style among hot rodders and has long been recognized as America’s quintessential hot rod. These vehicles formed the foundation for the hot rod movement.”

Ford Motor Company, an US multinational corporation Ford in 1903, is the third biggest automaker around the globe. The auto corporation is now made up of several brands that include Lincoln, Mercury, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin and Volvo. Ford also owns one-third controlling interest in Mazda. The company has been in continuous family control for more than 100 years.

Ford has introduced numerous remarkable vehicles in the past. Up until now, the third largest automaker is still making big waves in the auto market despite its reported losses in several segments. Current flexible fuel vehicles from the automaker are F-150, Focus, Taurus, Mercury Grand Marquis, Lincoln Town Car, Crown Victoria, and Ranger.

1986 Ford Crown Victoria parts reflect reliability and durability. Ford Ranger aftermarket parts, consequently, exude quality, style and performance. Also, hybrid electric vehicles from the automaker also created warm acceptance from the auto market. This is especially true with Escape Hybrid. Ford Escape hybrid parts accessories have established a superb reputation in the industry.

Ford Pushes Hot-selling Models

22 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Last year, the Ford Motor Company suffered a sore 8 percent decline in sales. To circumvent the long-lasting sales melancholia, Ford made a comprehensive plan that involves intensive marketing of its more famous and profitable vehicles.

Ford is famed for the enduring excellence of the F-Series in the pickup truck segment. Ford F-Series parts have established a standout reputation in the auto industry. As a fact, F-Series, up until now, is still the best-selling truck around the globe. In America, it has been the hottest-selling truck for 28 years now.

Ford is also putting emphasis on the promotion of other hot-selling vehicles like the Fusion sedan and the Edge crossover. Ford car parts used in said vehicles are of cutting-edge nature. They are the result of extensive study and testing by Ford engineers.

It can be recalled that Ford has snatched back the “best-selling brand in America” title from its mighty auto rival ? Chevrolet. In view of this title, the automaker is now concentrating on improving the best vehicles within the auto clan. To do this, Ford made use of catchy ads to lift sales of its hot vehicles. Despite the drop in sales, the automaker will launch a grand ad campaign to celebrate the 30 victorious years of the F-Series. “No one else can claim that,” said Cisco Codina, Ford group vice president of marketing, sales and service.

F-Series has been attacked side by side accordingly; it is high time for the automaker to tout its bread and butter trucks. Ford’s target for F-Series was severely missed. Also, F-Series sales was down by 12 percent last year. But Ford seem not to be losing hope.

It can be recalled that Mark Fields, Ford’s president of the Americas, earlier said, “I think their fears are misplaced. We’re so bullish on the strength of the F-Series, in fact, that we’re committed to sell more than 900,000 F-Series trucks this year for the third year in a row. That’s unprecedented.” Unfortunately, the fear grows into veracity. Ford has just sold 796,000 units of trucks. Although, Ford retained its title as the “king of the Hill,” it cannot deny the fact that competition is getting tougher and tougher and never fails to exert pressure in the segment.

CNW Marketing Research in Bandon, Oregon estimates that gains on full-size pickups were about $13,000 a vehicle before marketing costs last year; 40 percent of which are from Super Duty workhorse models. The new versions will be officially introduced by the automaker this month. Said models entertain new styling and offer cutting-edge auto technologies and features. Said features include sophisticated Ford truck mirrors, step, and other significant auto parts.

With regards Fusion, the automaker hired Car and Driver to manage a comparison program and it turned out to be a successful one. “I believe that we can do a lot more with it than we have up until now,” Barry Engle, general manager for Ford Division marketing said. “There’s a lot of upside on this product. We’re going to push it and let’s see where it goes.”

Ford is now putting its best foot forward to reignite the sluggish sales of its vehicles. This dilemma has haunted the automakers for years and Ford is determined to overcome the burdens and land once again on auto industry’s safer grounds.

Ford to Expand China Operations

22 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Auto manufacturers are always looking for ways to increase their presence in the global auto market. Increasing profit involves venturing to other markets aside from one?s very own. That is why car manufacturers such as the Ford Motor Company are steadily increasing their coverage by expanding their global market.

Recently, the member of the U.S. auto market?s Big Three announced that they will be expanding their operation at the world?s second largest auto market. China, the giant of a country, is now steadily increasing its demand for vehicles as the country becomes more and more progressive.

Mei-Wei Cheng, the vice-president of the Ford Motor Company and the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Ford Motor China, officially announced their expansion in a news conference. Among other concerns that Cheng reported is the official start of production of engines at the Ford Mazda Engine Company. Cheng announced that the production will start ?very soon?. The engines to be produced at the said facility will be used to meet the demand for Ford and Mazda vehicles in the country.

Cheng also announced that the newly opened Ford Mazda Automobile Company will begin production of vehicles to be released in the China auto market will begin before the end of 2007. The automobiles to be assembled at the said facility will be suited to the needs of Chinese motorists. The Ford Motor China also announced that the newest generation of the Ford Mondeo will roll out of their production facility within this year. Cheng announced that the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Company in Nanjing will be producing small cars.

During his talk, Cheng also announced that the Ford Motor Research & Engineering was recently given approval by the Chinese government. He said that the facility will give the Ford Motor China significant boost in engineering. The institution will also help Ford Motor in the global scale as Ford China will be in a position to help its parent company in designing future models.

?These collective announcements underscore Ford Motor?s commitment to the China market and China?s growing importance to our overall global strategy,? says Cheng. ?Ford Motor China now encompasses one of the most comprehensive and competitive operations in the Chinese market, including full-scale vehicle and engine production; research, development and engineering; sales; after sales services; and auto financing. Our local partnerships and the smooth implementation of our China strategy have greatly contributed to Ford becoming a leader of China?s automobile market,? he added further.

As part of the press conference, Cheng announced that the lineup of Ford China will include different vehicle body types such as ?premiere and mid-size vehicles, small cars, SAVs, SUVs, and commercial vehicles,? according to Cheng. He also pointed out that the company is offering Ford models which have and is currently popular in the European market. ?Our hugely successful European products have also proven to be very popular among Chinese consumers,? Cheng said. ?From the hot selling Focus to the eye-catching S-MAX, and now the sleek Mondeo, Ford will continue to introduce our latest auto design engineering concepts to the China market. This will be supported by our renowned professional sales and after sales services, as well as our creative ?Make Every Day Exciting? brand campaign,? added Cheng further.

Ford?s business operation in China dates back to 1913 when the most popular car in the world is the Model T. Eighty-eight years later, Ford entered into a partnership with the Chinese company Changan Automotive Corporation. The joint venture was then called the Changan Ford Automobile Corporation. Then, in 2006, Mazda joined the venture and its name was then changed to the Changan Ford Mazda Automobile. With the expansion of this operation more and more Chinese will have access to Ford vehicles which can be equipped with ford cold air intake systems.

Ford Regrets not Moving Fast Enough on Environmental Opportunity, Styling

20 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Ford Motor Company Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said last Thursday that they were not able to get the chance to pick up the lead in responding to environmental concerns as well as to style its sedan that looked flat in recent years. With this, he regretted that they did not move faster.

He said that as Ford Motor Company tried to shift away from a reliance on pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles in which it had really high revenues, it had not been aggressive enough in fixing the style of its passenger cars.

According to him, their company did not explore that much in the past few years. He said that they were not bold enough as they got back into the car business.

Bill Ford Jr. who is the great-grandson of Henry (the founder of the company) had quirky five-year tenure as the automaker’s chief executive. So his remarks was his fullest public commentary when he was speaking to a group of business, political and civic leaders on the reorganization of the U.S. auto industry.

Last year, he gave up the position of CEO with the hiring of former Boeing Co. executive Alan Mulally as his replacement.

Bill Ford said that with the prevailing standpoint in the U.S. auto industry on the environment, his long-running personal interest in environmental causes had once put him in the midst of difficulties. He said some perceived him as a crazy radical that when he entered the topic on environment two decades ago or even five years, many people thought that he was a weirdo.

Ford missed the opportunity to do more even if he said that he was grateful that their company had developed a hybrid Escape SUV on his watch and refined its Rouge Assembly plant in such a way that environmentalists would commend his efforts.

According to several analysts, Toyota Motor Corporation?s Prius hybrid, a market-leading product, and its related reputation for building vehicles that are fuel efficient have helped it gain ground on Ford in the U.S. market and overtake General Motors Corporation as the industry?s leading car maker all over the world.

United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said that the GMC, Ford, and Chrysler were being levied on with a biased reputation for not competing on fuel economy. Unfortunately, according to him, there is a misperception that these big Detroit car makers only make gas consumers, while Toyota is a division of Greenpeace.

On the part of Ford Motor Company, Bill Ford said that their company would be more aggressive in terms of marketing in direct comparisons with Toyota and other automakers. This is to address a “perception gap” with consumers who now avoid its products.

Recently, Ford launched an advertisement comparing the Fusion sedan with the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. The chairman said that more similar ads could be coming.

Ford said their own data reveal they have just pulled tantamount to Toyota. But he added that if one asks the average person on the street regrading that, they would think you are insane.

He had been spending more time on Ford’s long-term strategy and meeting the employees, and these are passed on to the new CEO.

In the middle of a sweeping reorganization, Ford includes trimming almost 45,000 jobs and closing 16 plants in North America. This is their way to make the region profitable.

Brief History of Ford

19 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company, currently the third largest carmaker in the world, with the Dodge Brothers in 1903. While Henry Ford has been building motor vehicles before this, 1903 is the year when he, supported by twelve investors, established the famous company.

Ford?s first cars were named chronologically with letters: the model A was introduced in 1903 for example. In 1904 Ford introduced the world famous T Model that was to become a symbol of the American motorcar industry.

In 1907 Ford launched its current Blue Oval Trademark but it wasn?t until 1928 that a Model A had the first version of the familiar Ford script.

Henry Ford had witnessed a huge success with his vehicles especially with the T Model and by the early 1910?s he expanded overseas, with production facilities in France, Denmark and Germany, England and Austria.

When the First World War started, Ford was producing half of the cars being sold in the US and almost half of all cars being produced in England. During the war, Ford produced many of its cars for the military.

In 1922, Ford acquired Lincoln Motor Company in the desire of expanding its market share as Ford wanted to enter the luxurious car market.

By 1941, Ford owned the largest assembly plant in the world and during the World War II Ford produced not only your standard military vehicles, but also B-24 Liberator bombers and tanks.

Henry Ford died in 1947 and by that time Ford was a reputed world carmaker. It is said that over seven million people paid their final respects at his funeral.

Post WWII Ford was a company that developed and evolved very fast. Many famous models were produced in the 1950s and the 1960s, such as the Thunderbird (1955), the F-1 truck (1948) and the Mustang (1964). Ford also continued to develop and implement the latest technologies in their cars and they had become one of the most important carmakers in the world during the Cold War.

During that time Ford Motor Company continued to expand overseas, looking for other possible investments. In 1979 they bought a quarter of the Japanese carmaker Mazda, in 1987 Ford bought Aston Martin and in 1989 Ford acquired Jaguar. In 1999 Ford acquired Volvo and Land Rover in 2000.

In 2003 Ford Motor Company celebrated its 100th birthday and it introduced a series of special commemorative cars, such as the new Ford Mustang. In the recent years Ford has faced some financial problems (the company reported losses of over $12 billion for the 2006 fiscal year) that led to the selling of some of the brands from the Ford group: Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover.

Ford in Britain the Early Years

19 November 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Ford in Britain the Early Years

Ford Arrives in the UK

The Ford motor company first arrived in Britain in the same year as Ford was first founded in the United States (1903). Henry Ford had two model A cars shipped over from Detroit to Liverpool to showcase his new cars in the UK. Sending the cars to the UK achieved exactly what Henry Ford had wanted, he established the first Ford franchise in the UK.

The cars were shown at the Cordingley Automobile Exhibition in the fashionable London borough of Islington. At the show they caught the attention of Aubrey Blakiston who once he had thoroughly inspected the two type A Fords decided to set up the UKs first ever Ford dealer. The new franchise was based at Long Acre in London. Having set up the first UK based Ford dealer Blakiston realised he needed help and employed the mechanically minded Percy Perry. With Blakiston ailing Perry purchased the company and continued to run it. Times were hard with Fords? insistence all payments for stock be made up front, and the heavy cost of importing the cars from the US strong contributors to the financial problems.

Perry Sees the Potential in Ford and Persists

Despite the cash flow difficulties Perry could see the potential to make a profit from Ford automobiles in the UK and persisted with the business. Perry advertised for further investment to bolster the companies struggling finances. His advertisement was successful and with the new found financial strength he was able to purchase the Central Motor Company and move to larger premises in Westminster, London.

Ford Marketing Machine Fuels UK Expansion

In 1908 the Ford Model T made its debut at the 1907 Olympia Motor Exhibition the publicity from this generated more sales in the UK and with Ford now doing very well in the US a great deal more effort was invested into marketing Ford in the UK. The resulting success of this marketing meant that Percy Perry was able to persuade Henry Ford to set up a London Branch of the Ford Motor company. Ford purchased premises in Shaftsbury Avenue, London. Within a year Ford had sold over 400 cars in the UK.

The Ford Dealer Network is established

Perry keen to further build on the success his business was having in partnership with Ford began to establish a Ford dealer network across the UK. The first dealer was established in Southampton in late 1910 and operated by a Mr Percy Hendy. Perry began to build up the Ford dealer network across Britain opening dealerships in many UK towns and Cities including Manchester, Nottingham, Liverpool, Coventry and Leicester. As the dealership network expanded so did the demand placed upon Ford in London.

Ford UK Ltd is Born

With Ford London under an increasing amount of pressure due to the success of the newly formed Ford dealership network. Henry Ford decided to establish the first Ford factory outside of North America. The factory was to be located in Manchester in the North of England. Production at the factory was steady and the factory provided a welcome boast to the local economy. When the factory was first established the men worked on static benches but as time went buy the Manchester Ford Factory moved to the revolutionary moving production line, which is widely thought to be the first of its kind in the UK. This new method of production clearly had a big impact on factory production methods across the UK. The improvements to UK production techniques came just in time for the First World War where they were tested to the limit, as was Ford in the UK
