Ford’s Warriors in Pink – Driving for a Cause

31 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Since the year 1995, Ford has allocated more than $87 million to create breast cancer awareness and eradication. Further, in its Bold Moves plan, the automaker sets forth its Warriors in Pink, which is aimed at bolstering Ford’s goal.

While the automaker is busy promoting its new Super Duty to defend the ‘King of the Hill’ title and making popular its 2005 Ford Super Duty parts, Ford is also focused on one vital social and medical ruthless slayer that has took away more than thousands of lives breast cancer.

Episode 16 of Bold Moves profiles Ford’s Warriors in Pink, which conveys that every individual has the power to fight back cancer and mark a difference. Globally, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women. It is also the most fatal cancer among females. The figures of fatalities of breast cancer continue to rise with time hence; the call to a more rigid campaign is crucial.

Warriors in Pink of Ford raise funds for the benefit of Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, an organization that is devoted to develop awareness, finance significant research, educate people, promote early detection techniques of breast cancer and create community outreach programs.

Ford recruits Warriors to lend a hand in ramping up the fight against breast cancer. The automaker helps the foundation through the sale of specially designed apparel and accessories for men, women and children. These items are displayed on Ford Cares domain. All of the Warrior in Pink gear net proceeds will go to Komen Foundation.

The symbol of Ford’s commitment is a pink Fusion, wrapped in artsy logos designed for said cause. Warrior in Pink is part of Ford’s Bold Moves. The latter involves a series of Ford’s plan to recover from its past losses. Every week on the Bold Moves website, visitors can enjoy the 3.5 minute video installment about the automaker’s episodes to move forward.

“The documentary will present a picture of a company that is committed to revitalization through our people, products, improved quality and costs, and a laser-sharp focus on the customer,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s President of the Americas. “Each episode will provide evidence that it’s not business as usual at the Ford Motor Company and that ‘Change or Die’ is not a sound bite. It’s the way we’re approaching our future.”

Ford Windstar Recalls – A Complete Auto Review.

31 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Clearly, a less important concern – for the moment-than Ford Windstar recalls might be what Levine Breaking News reported March 14, 2006: an anti-gay/conservative Christian group are seeking retribution by boycotting Ford Motors…because Ford advertises in gay publications.

Tell me when did we give up the right to spend our hard-earned money on costly advertising, top-class merchandise, and any ^%$# publication we wish to read, write for, subscribe to, publicize in, or be a demographic target for? Okay. Hold on. Before I get all involved in who has what – ahem – RIGHTS, I should calm down, digress, and recoup to the more significant concern or issue: Ford Winstar recalls. There are several of them, that vary from safety and other recall issues (and usually getting increasingly lessened by year), but a mention here will suffice, as other investigations thoroughly cover by describing and explaining.

With all of or despite all the recalls, I am still a huge Ford fan-having brought up around, in, and looking at and listening to hot rods and trucks made by Ford Motor Corp.. What’s more, I would still fight for the right to sell, buy, advertise, drive, think about or talk about any damned material item I please. Go Ford!

Toyota Likely to Beat Ford in U.s

30 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Toyota Motor Corp. is expected to gain enough to take over Ford Motor Co. as the second largest automaker in the United States next to General Motors. According to some auto analysts, they saw large sales in December on the part of Ford. This is perceived to be in favor of the struggling Japanese automaker.

Edmunds.com tracked auto sales data and stated that Ford could suffer a remarkable 19.6 percent drop in December compared to last year’s record. On the one hand, Ronald Tadross, Bank of America analyst, expects that Ford would drop by 10 to 12 percent range. Also, several analysts expect that Toyota has the nerve to unseat the ailing Ford.

If auto analysts’ prediction would turn into reality, it would happen for the second month in a row and the third month of 2006. Jesse Toprak, chief economist for Edmunds, said Toyota likely will claim the No. 2 spot for the year in 2007, although Ford could bounce back for a few months during the first half of the new year. Toprak added, “They’re [Ford] going to be down in pretty much every single segment. They really did not have any new products that will bring excitement and showroom traffic to a great extent.”

Toprak also noted that the sales drop of Ford is attributed to the cessation of Taurus production. Taurus is a midsize front wheel drive vehicle. The car was introduced in 1985 to replace the Fairmont. Taurus auto parts are known for their reliability. No wonder why the car is loved by a lot of aficionados even up to this present time.

Toprak also expects that the sale of Ford’s bread and butter trucks will also decline. One of Ford’s pride vehicles is the F-150, the best-selling pickup in America. This is the very reason why Ford is meticulously supervising the manufacture and assembly of auto parts Ford F-150. “We cannot be distracted about things like that,” said George Pipas, Ford’s top sales analyst. He added that Ford is focused on returning its business to profitability.

It can be recalled that Ford has lost $7 billion during the first three quarters of 2006. Moreover, more declines in sales are expected to overwhelm the automaker. Toyota, on the one hand, is expected to yield a 7.3 percent increase in December.

Ford Could Probably Sell Aston Martin This Week

30 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

The Ford Motor Co. is in exclusive talks with Prodrive, a motorsport and automotive company, over the possible sale of the U.S. carmaker’s Aston Martin luxury car unit.

It was earlier reported that Prodrive had trouble financing a bid but the automaker had chosen the company because it had offered a higher price than other interested purchasers. According to reports, more than 450 million pounds would be given to Ford as consideration of the Aston Martin.

To date, the automaker did not release any comment on this matter. However, a source familiar to the potential deal said that the automaker could announce the sale of the Aston Martin as early as this week. Last year, Ford announced that it would sell all or just a part of the Aston Martin to raise funds for other company businesses.

Formula One team Prodrive, working with Egypt’s Naeem investment bank, is the frontrunner to purchase Ford?s luxury unit. Prodrive Ltd. is famed for designing, constructing and racing cars for companies and teams such as Subaru and Aston Martin. The company?s Automotive Technology division, which is based in Warwick, also offers road car design and engineering consultation for other automakers. The company is popularly known for its participation in the World Rally Championship with the Subaru World Rally Team.

However, the source did not deny other enthusiastic bidders such as the UK buyout firm Doughty Hanson. The source added that negotiations are still in the process should talks fall. In addition, the deal also has the possibility to slip away. Sources familiar to the deal said Doughty Hanson and Syrian-born property tycoon Simon Halabi also submitted second-round offers for the Aston Martin in an auction being run by investment bank UBS AG.

According to a top Ford official, the Aston Martin is on solid financial footing. The sales of the car brand were also increased by the James Bond spy movies which made the brand quite popular. According to the sales record, the sales went up by around half last year to about 6,500 units.

On the other side of the automaker?s hype, the Ford Family was awarded the Robert E. Petersen Lifetime Achievement Award this weekend in Indianapolis. The award coincided with the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Ford. Edsel B. Ford II, the great-grandson of Henry Ford – founder of the company, received the award.

?I accept this on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of Ford employees who preceded me, who work with me now and who will come after me,? said Ford. ?It really was the entire Ford Motor Company that produced the ‘32 Ford.? The 32 does not only showcase classic Ford body parts but powerful performance as well.

The said award is given annually at the Hot Rod and Restoration Trade Show. Previous awardees include racing legends like Carroll Shelby and Andy Granatelli and automotive designers like George Barris.

“This is the first time the award has honored an entire family instead of an individual,? said Dick Messer, the director of the Petersen Automotive Museum. “There are no more deserving recipients than the two men who literally started the performance industry, Henry and Edsel Ford.?

?I expect there will be hundreds of ‘32?s of all iterations, from stock cars to panel vans to hot rods,? said Keith Crain, the publisher of Automotive News. ?It will be a great way to appreciate the history of Ford.?

Ford “not in Discussion” to Sell Volvo

29 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

The United States’ Big Three have been experiencing the lowest points in their history as Japanese carmakers continue their rise in the United States auto market. Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have already announced and implemented workforce reduction as part of their turnaround plans. In the case of Dearborn, Michigan based Ford Motor Company, selling off a brand is seen as a short term solution to their financial woes.

Earlier this year, Ford sold the British luxury car brand Aston Martin to a consortium led by racing champion David Richards. The money generated from the sale of the prestigious brand served as a boost for the financial status of the car manufacturer.

After the sale of the famed brand, there have been speculations that Ford will be putting another British brand on the auction block – this time the Jaguar. Ford however denied that they are planning to sell the struggling luxury car brand.

More recently, it was the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo which is being speculated to be the next to go after Aston Martin. It was rumored that German car giant BMW AG requested for the full financial status of Volvo Cars from a Swiss bank who is taking care of the financial aspects of Volvo’s operation under Ford’s Premiere Auto Group.

This speculation though was recently denied by Ford with spokesman John Gardiner saying “Ford is not in discussions with BMW or any other carmaker regarding interest in the Volvo Car Corp.” The speculation surrounding the sale of Volvo became stronger when it was reported in newspapers in London and Sweden that BMW is talking with Ford concerning the sale of the safety-first oriented car manufacturer.

Another development in the auto industry which fanned the flames of speculation concerning the sale of Volvo is the fact that DaimlerChrysler recently sold its ailing American arm in the form of the Chrysler Group to Cerberus – an investment firm.

Meanwhile, FoMoCo pushes on with its restructuring plans to return the company to profitability after posting their biggest loss in their long history last year. Ford announced recently that they have closed down their Canadian engine casting plant. The closing down of the plant is in connection with Ford’s plan to eliminate engine casting as part of their business. Other manufacturing facilities like the ones building Ford body parts will be continuing their operations. The said Canadian plant produced cylinder block castings for Ford’s 4.2-liter V6 engines and crankshafts for various engines used by Ford on their different auto models. These engines are the 4.2-liter, 5.4-liter V-8, 3.0-liter V-6, 4.6 liter V-8 and the 2.3-liter engines.

The said Canadian plant employed approximately 450 persons as well as creating other jobs outside the facility’s operations. Aside from the Canadian casting plant, Ford also announced that they will be closing down another casting plant near Cleveland. The Ford Motor Company announced further that they are looking for independent auto parts manufacturers to supply them with the engine castings. This step will ensure that they can focus more on manufacturing of more important auto components such as engines and gearboxes.

Ford Looks at 2008s to Stabilize Market Share

29 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

The Dearborn-based automaker Ford Motor Company lost $12.7 billion last year – the most that they have lost in the company?s long and quite so colorful history. The company has even sold the ultra-luxury brand Aston Martin to bolster its sagging coffers. And now it is in the process of selling the two British brands in the Premiere Automotive Group (PAG) – Jaguar and Land Rover.

For the near future though, FoMoCo is looking to increase their shrinking market share in the United States auto market. The company hopes to increase its market share by offering a revitalized lineup for the 2008 model year. The company will be offering the revived and redesigned Ford Taurus and the production of which has just started. Aside from the Taurus, Ford?s 2008 model year lineup also includes redesigned crossover SUVs. Crossovers are now considered the most sought after vehicle in the market.

According to Ford?s president of the Americas, Mark Fields, the company is aiming to take about 14 to 15 percent of the local auto market. The past years has seen the market share of the car manufacturer reduced as Japanese rivals increased sales in the United States. Toyota, Honda and Nissan are all expanding their offerings for the United States auto market and Ford needs to counter it by offering new and competitive cars.

According to Fields, the company?s share of the market today is about 15.3 percent. This means that one goal in their ?Way Forward? has already been achieved and now they are looking to stabilize that share in the largest auto market in the world. At an event at Ford?s Dearborn testing facility where new Ford, Mercury and Lincoln vehicles were showcased, Fields has this to say: ?We really are starting to deliver products that people will want.?

Aside from the Ford Taurus sedan which has been redesigned completely and looks very different from its predecessor, Ford will also introduce the Taurus X for the 2008 model year. The Taurus X is a rebadged version of the Ford Freestyle, a crossover SUV. The Taurus X is one of the vehicles that Ford is looking at to attract car buyers with. Their lineup of light trucks is also redesigned for the 2008 model year. SUVs and pickups which can be equipped with the Ford pickup cowl cover are now offered with more standard features to attract more buyers.

Aside from anchoring their hopes on the 2008 lineup, Ford is also looking to continue their workforce reduction. According to Fields, Ford has essentially achieved the goal of cutting down 14,000 jobs. Fields said that about 4,000 employees have already left the company last year, while the 10,000 employee-reduction will be implemented this year.

?We actually are done with that,? said Fields. ?We do have some folks that are staying with us a little bit longer, through the remainder of the year, in some critical positions.?

As for their production capacity, Fields has this to say: ?Overall, we’re ahead of where we expected to be in capacity reduction. Economic conditions continue to make it more and more difficult for our suppliers, and that means we are going to have to work even harder to reach our targeted material cost reductions.?

Ford lost money last year due to the fact that they are producing vehicles more than what they can sell. To turn the company back to profitability, Ford needed to reduce its production.

Ford Entertains Bigger Chassis

28 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Ford Motor Co. may seem struggling in some auto categories. But the Dearborn-based automaker is doing well in the manufacture of pickup trucks, its bread and butter vehicles. To hold onto its lead in the industry, the automaker seeks to unveil largest and most adaptable motor homes.

The Blue Oval does not sell recreational vehicles under its own name, but Ford is the leading manufacturer of motor home chassis in the United States. Ford said Tuesday it will widen its lead by unveiling its biggest, most-capable motor home chassis at the annual RV show in Louisville, Ky.

The new F53 Super Duty Class A chassis, made in Detroit, is all about weight. There are six models in the lineup. Based on reports, the biggest has a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,000 pounds.

According to Rob Stevens, chief engineer for Ford’s commercial truck division, that refers to the amount of weight that can be added to the chassis, and titanic numbers like this are just what RV companies are looking for today. “It’s all about knowing our customers,” he said.

“We spend a lot of time traveling to their factories, working with their engineers and finding out what their needs are,” Stevens said, adding that those usually come down to more weight. “Baby boomers want to take their houses with them.”

For the biggest motor homes, the automaker is offering its 6.8-liter Triton V-10, which provides best-in-class performance producing 362 horsepower and 457 foot-pounds of torque. Aside from the superb hauling power, the automaker?s new chassis deliver improved ride and handling, quieter operation and wheels capable of turning up to 50 degrees in either direction.

The F53 is manufactured at a factory inside a Detroit Renaissance Zone. The 33-acre plant, owned by brothers Mike and Carlton Guthrie, operates as a contract manufacturing facility for the Dearborn automaker, with Ford?s own staff supervising the production.

“We’re not quite an arm’s-length first-tier supplier, nor are we a Ford plant. We’re somewhere in between,” said Detroit Chassis Plant CEO Mike Guthrie. “Our plant is entirely dedicated to Ford Motor Co. They’re our only customer and it’s our only product.”

When the Guthries first approached the automaker, the RV chassis were manufactured in Mexico. With help from the city and the United Auto Workers, who agreed to competitive contract terms, the brothers were able to put together a bid to produce the underbodies in Detroit for less than Ford was paying in Mexico, the report continued.

“The commercial truck business is a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle. One of the very big pieces of that puzzle is the motor home industry,” said Joe Castelli, director of marketing for Ford’s commercial truck division. “It’s a good business for Ford.”

The automaker does not divulge financial results for its motor home venture, but Castelli said Ford produces about 30,000 RV chassis of all classes each year, accounting for about 10 percent of its total commercial truck output. And it is consistently profitable.

The largest models borrow from the F-650 commercial trucks. Castelli said these titans will not only guarantee Ford stays in the lead, but should increase its share even more despite the escalating gasoline price.

As other automakers focus on the enhancement of other auto parts such as engines and shocks, Ford takes the risk of beefing up the chassis. It is a risk Ford is willing to take, Castelli said. “This is one of the hidden gems at Ford,” he concluded. “It’s got a lot of momentum, and we expect it to keep growing.”

Ford Expedition Deadly in Rollover Accidents

26 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Like many other SUVs, the Ford Expedition has proven to be defectively designed and extremely deadly when involved in a rollover accident.

Although designed to be driven off road, the Expedition is not equipped with sufficient roof support, adequate door latches, or laminated glass, that could mean the difference between life and death in a rollover accident. Engineers and safety experts have actively suggested fundamental changes to the Expedition to increase its rollover resistance, however Ford Motor Co. continues to choose less expensive and less effective remedies as permanent solutions to a life threatening issue.

Rollovers accounted for over 10,000 fatalities in the United States in 2004. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rollover accidents are more likely to result in fatalities than other types of accidents. In 2004, about 2.7 percent of occupants involved in rollover accidents were fatally injured. That same year, only 0.2 percent of occupants involved in accidents that did not involve rollovers were fatally injured. This means 33 percent of all passenger vehicle occupant fatalities in 2004, occurred in accidents that involved a rollover.

Due to its high center of gravity, the Ford Expedition is disproportionately prone to rollovers when compared to other passenger vehicles. If a vehicle has a higher center of gravity and is quickly redirected (as when a vehicle driver tries to avoid a sudden obstruction) the vehicle can topple and rollover. The Expedition holds excessive weight at a higher level than other passenger vehicles leading to handling and stability defects. Because the Expedition is top-heavy, it is prone to heavy oversteering by drivers, making a rollover accident likely.

One of the biggest dangers to Ford Expedition occupants in the event of a rollover accident is roof intrusion. Roof intrusion or “roof crush” refers to a situation when the roof of a vehicle does not maintain its shape during a rollover and is crushed or collapses, seriously injuring vehicle occupants. The extreme weight of the Ford Expedition in combination with a weak roof design makes the SUV prone to severe roof intrusion during a rollover accident.

In the event of a rollover, the roof pillars, front roof header, and side roof rails of the Ford Expedition often collapse and invade the occupant safety zone. When this happens, the roof of the Expedition is usually forced down onto the top of occupants’ heads often causing brain contusions. Furthermore, the forces are often transferred to the spine causing a fracture to the cervical neck. This type of spinal cord injury usually results in paraplegia, quadriplegia or death. According to the Crash Injury Research & Engineering Network (CIREN), the roof of a passenger vehicle is the source of over half (56 percent) of all head injuries and one-third (33 percent) of all spinal cord injuries in rollover accidents.

Problems with the design of some vehicle doors have been brought under great scrutiny in recent years. Shouldn’t vehicle doors be manufactured in a way that is strong enough to withstand the impact of a real accident? Absolutely! Vehicle doors are considered a key element of the overall structural strength and protection that an automobile should, and is required by law, provide to its occupants. Unfortunately, many vehicles are equipped with doors that are not strong enough to bear the pressure endured during a rollover accident.

In the event of a rollover accident, the strength of the torsion spring that is designed to hold the door latches or door locks shut may not be strong enough to perform as intended. The torsion spring controls the amount of force required to release the safety grip of the vehicle handle and open the door. The safety grip is created by the outward pressure of the torsion spring against the latch claw mechanism. Its primary purpose is to hold the vehicle door in its closed position. The door latch or door lock problem occurs when the torsion spring is too weak to maintain the safety grip under extended amounts of pressure – such as the pressure that is endured during a rollover accident- and allows the vehicle door to open exposing the occupants to much greater levels of injury.

The Ford Expedition is equipped with defective door latches. During a rollover accident the excessive weight of the Expedition increases the pressures and forces applied to the side doors of the vehicle. The door latches of the Expedition are too weak to hold the doors shut during the rollover, creating an opportunity for occupant ejection or partial ejection from the vehicle. In the event of a rollover accident, the door latch fails allowing the door to open during the event and exposes the occupant to deadly objects and impacts outside the safety of the vehicle.

On May 23, 2004, a 10-year-old boy from Texas endured fatal injuries when he was partially ejected from a Ford Expedition in a rollover accident. The boy’s name was Matthew Morroquin. Matthew was seated in the driver’s side third row seat when the Expedition was hit by another vehicle. The Expedition was struck in the rear quarter on the passenger side causing it to rollover one and one-quarter times. All of the occupants in the Expedition, including 10-year-old Matthew, were properly restrained by seatbelts at the time of the accident. During the accident, the rear window glass shattered leaving Matthew unprotected from ejection out of the vehicle window. The 10-year-old boy was partially ejected through the unprotected window opening causing his head to be crushed between the vehicle and the ground. The boys fatal injuries may have been avoided had the Expedition been equipped with stronger side window glass.

Laminated or glazed glass has been in use for about 60 years. This industrial strength glass is like a glass-plastic-glass sandwich. An acoustic-grade interlayer, composed of three layers of acoustic polyvinyl butyral (PVB), is laminated between two sheets of glass creating a stronger, more flexible, and lighter product. Laminated glass provides over 10 times the intrusion resistance of the traditional tempered glass and is about 4 pounds lighter than non-laminated glass.

Studies show that vehicle occupants are five times as likely to endure fatal injuries when ejection is a factor in an automobile accident. If the Ford Expedition in the May 23, 2004 rollover accident were equipped with laminated side glass, 10-year-old Matthew Morroquin would probably be alive today. Although it is widely used in other vehicle models in the United States, laminated or glazed side glass in not used in any of the Expedition models. The use of laminated side glass would help prevent occupant ejection and multitudes of injuries and deaths that result from vehicle ejection.

Automotive engineers have long agreed that injuries are reduced dramatically if the occupants are secured within the safety zone of a rolling vehicle without severe intrusion. The technology to ensure this level of safety has been available for years. However, little action has been taken to implement the necessary changes.

On July 6, 1968, Mr. J.R. Weaver, a safety engineer for Ford, submitted an internal memo titled “Roof Strength Study” to Ford Motor Co. In the memo, Weaver stated that “people are injured by roof collapse” and he suggests that some rollover accidents are so severe that the basic roof design would have to be altered to withstand the impact. Don Huelke, another noted engineer, stated that the amount of roof intrusion is directly attributed to the severity of non-ejected occupant injuries.

In the spring of 2000, Ford engineers recommended that the company launch a recall campaign to fix defective door handles for over 4 million Ford vehicles, including Expedition models years 1997-2000. Ford engineers advised that the design and manufacture of stronger springs and the installation of a counterweight was necessary to keep the Expedition doors shut. The cost would have been 99 cents per door. Unfortunately for consumers, Ford’s investigation found that such a recall would cost about $527 million to fix all the defective door handles and decided to disregard the safety advice of their engineers.

With approximately 300,000 rollover accidents and over 10,000 rollover fatalities occurring every year in the United States, rollover accidents are possibly the most significant safety issues concerning passenger vehicle occupants. The Ford Expedition is a major contributor to the number of vehicle rollover deaths. Due to its defective design, the Expedition can be very unstable and therefore prone to rollover accidents. Research suggests that stronger roofs, stronger door latches, and stronger window glass would tremendously improve the safety of Expedition occupants.

Most auto manufacturers consciously refuse to take the corrective action necessary to save hundreds of vehicle occupant lives, preferring instead to make a cheaper product and increase their profit margins. Our federal regulatory agencies do not have the guts to mandate improved safety standards. Consumers are therefore left to better investigate what they are buying and sue for redress when they have been duped.

Ford Escape Hybrid Overview

25 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

With the high interests of fuel-efficient vehicles in the car industry the Ford Motor Company finds itself in a quick race to fall into the category, however with a slightly different approach. Entering with an immediate turnover, Ford introduced a sports utility, this being the first of its kind we?ve ever seen.

Compared to with the Ford Escape which is an SUV, it?s evident that the hybrid was designed around this vehicle, maintaining that the only difference being that it uses an electric and a fuel engine in accordance which enhances the idea completely.

Being the initial SUV vehicle with hybrid technology to enter the industry, the Ford Escape Hybrid maintains a luxurious aspect to it. Ford intends to keep on promoting the Ford Escape Hybrid, expecting that a sturdy and recurring rise in sales by reducing costs would standardize, if not strengthen its rise in the car sales industry, as this method is especially accustomed to North Americans.

Edmunds, which is a market research company evaluated and significantly outlines the industry?s interest in the Ford Escape Hybrid SUV. In an evaluation the vehicle proved to be cost-efficient, retaining that a buyer would be able to cover costs within 3 years ? and this is due to the fuel-efficiency whereby maintaining less expenses to the average car user. The continuous rise in fuel prices admits the car further into popularity among car buyers in today?s industry.

Titled the Truck of the Year in 2005 by the North American Auto Show, and even awarded in recognition as the eleventh greenest vehicle by the American Count for an Energy Efficient Economy, the Ford Escape Hybrid would surely impress the hybrid car market.
