Engine Fluids and General Maintenance

What You Need to Know

How often should you change your oil?

How often should I change my transmission fluid?

How often should I change drive train fluids for rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive vehicles?

At what mileage should I start performing maintenance on my vehicle?

Is it expensive? ? Why should I do it?

These are all great questions!

Unfortunately there are as many answers as there are brands of oils on the market today.

Vehicles today are capable of driving 200,000 ? 500,000 miles on the original drive train parts. Most fluid changes cost between $19 ? 100. The part the fluid protects costs between $1,500 ? 10,000 and more!

Once a vehicle arrives at the 80,000 ? 100,000 mile mark, the fluids have outlived their useful life span. They are no longer able to fully protect your vehicle.

All vehicles have a manufacturer recommended service schedule. What most people do not know is there is up to three different maintenance schedules per vehicle. They are based on the kind of driver you are, the climate you live in and what the vehicle is being used for.

The oil life indicator on most vehicles today does not take these situations into consideration. They use a generic interpretation from above or only one of the above methods. They also do not take into consideration what brand or type of fluid is being used.

Most vehicles today that use the extended drain interval either recommend the use of synthetic oils or require them. The reason for this is the engines, transmissions and drive train components operate at a higher temperature and performance level than they did 10-15-20 years ago. Synthetic oils can last longer under extreme conditions without failing to protect the part they are lubricating. They also are much less likely to cause build up and leave behind sludge.

As of 1998 and newer, ALL vehicles either recommended or required the use of synthetics. Not all synthetics are created equal. Many of the name brands on the shelf are not true synthetic. They are derived from conventional oil ? (oil from the ground) and have been purified and have had additives added back into them so they can legally be called synthetic. These additives do not protect the vehicle once they are used up. A true synthetic is man made and uses almost no convention oil in it whatsoever.

Synthetic oil as a whole will not break down and leave your vehicle unprotected. Synthetics also improve fuel economy and eliminate costly part failures. They reduce our dependency on foreign oil and result in less byproduct being put in landfills.

Most conventional oils for engines will not last beyond 3,000 miles. Most synthetic oils on the market do not protect the engine beyond 5,000 miles.

You should also take into consideration how good is the oil filter being used, can it continue filtering? How good is the air filter that keeps dirt out of the engine and how well is the rest of the vehicle maintained?

There are oil changes using specific synthetic oils that will allow you to go 25,000 miles at a cost that is less expensive than most people spend on oil changes combined in one year using conventional oils. You can also find drive train fluids that are approved for 250,000 miles, which exceeds the manufacturer recommendations and can actually save you money in the long run.

Here are some basic rules on average for changing your engine oil:

? Change every 3,000 miles when using a good conventional oil

? Change every 5,000 miles when using most synthetic oils

? Change every 25,000 miles when using an Amsoil synthetic (www.amsoil.com)

Engine coolant should be flushed every 3 to 5 years to eliminate major part and gasket failures. Small particles will break off into the cooling system thus turning the coolant into very fine sandpaper, tearing away at the metal and gaskets within the engine.

Transmission fluid should be flushed every 30,000 ? 60,000 miles to eliminate transmission fluid related failures and extend the life of the transmission. Most transmissions fail due to some sort of fluid failure.

Differential fluids should be changed every 60,000 ? 100,000 miles to reduce and eliminate bearing failure

Fuel injection services should be performed annually to eliminate carbon build-up of the inside of the engine. This build-up lowers fuel economy and engine performance and causes other hard part failures.

Timing belts are the most common cause of engine failure today. Timing belts should be changed every 60,000 ? 100,000 miles. There are more cars seen in service at the 80,000 ? 125,000 mile mark that have not had the timing belt replaced. The broken belts result in major engine damage thus ending the life of the vehicle due to expenses involved in repairing or replacing the engine. Check your owner manual, local dealer or trustworthy repair shot to see if your vehicle has a timing belt and when it should be changed.

When it comes to your vehicle maintenance, it is always best to error on the safe side ? your vehicle is usually the second most expensive item you own.

People who regularly maintain their vehicle never have major breakdowns or costly repairs and their vehicle will last 200,000 ? 500,000 miles! Approximately $500 per year spent on maintaining your vehicle for five years is $2,500 ? a new engine or transmission can cost up to three times that amount!

The Ten Commandments for Diyers

8 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Do-It-Yourself car maintenance though sometimes is a total chore, is probably one of the most rewarding tasks you?ll ever do owning a car. How can you forget the very first time you repaired a minor glitch in your car?s lighting system, or the first time you replaced your car?s car?s flowmaster mufflers? Knowing you can handle your car?s problems and issues on your own ? and efficiently at that is no doubt a source of pride and confidence.

Here?s an interesting take on the rules of auto repair ? found in the internet, it is called The Ten Commandments of Auto Repair:

1. Thou shalt not place any essential portion of thy anatomy beneath a car that is not properly supported with jack stands or blocks.

2. Thou shalt not work on any part of the starting or charging system without first disconnecting the battery.

3. Thou shalt suffer no flame or spark near the battery or the fuel system.

4. Thou shalt forsake the open end of the wrench, and whenever possible to use always the box end upon thy nuts and thy bolts.

5. Thou shalt always securely block the wheels of the car before starting work, lest thee run thyself over with thine own car.

6. Thou shalt never lose thy temper or thy patience. Remember: “Act in haste and you will repent at your leisure.”

7. Thou shalt always exercise extreme care when opening thy radiator, lest thee parboil thyself or some innocent bystander.

8. Thou shalt clean up any and all of the fluids that thy auto may emit, lest they ignite or poison thy pet, thy child, thy soil or thy groundwater.

9. Thou shalt always place thy car’s transmission in Park or Neutral before commencing work.

10. Thou shalt never forget the laws of ASSUME, K.I.S.S., and Murphy, and never blame another person for thine own errors.

* ASSUME: When you ASSUME you make an ASS out of U and ME.

* K.I.S.S.: Keep It Simple Stupid.

* Murphy’s Laws:

1. Nothing is as easy as it looks.

2. Everything takes longer than you think.

3. Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

4. If there is a possibility of several things going wrong, the one that will cause the most damage will be the one to go wrong. Corollary: If there is a worse time for something to go wrong, it will happen then.

5. You never run out of things that can go wrong.

6. If anything simply cannot go wrong, it will anyway.

7. If you perceive that there are four possible ways in which a procedure can go wrong, and circumvent these, then a fifth way, unprepared for, will promptly develop.

8. If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

9. It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

10. Whenever you set out to do something, something else must be done first.

11. Every solution breeds new problems.

Amazing how one can learn a lot of new things everyday, isn?t it?

Nyc Photographer Says Lindsay Lohan Hit Him With Bmw

8 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Who could forget the pretty actress who played the main character in popular films like ?It Takes Two? and ?Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen??

Shot to stardom as a young actress in Disney movies, Lindsay Lohan is now one of the most photographed starlets in the world because of her successful movies and albums. But it seems that not everything is a fairy tale for the pretty face.

New York City photographer Giovanni Arnold has recently claimed that he was hit by “Georgia Rule” actress Lindsay Lohan?s BMW. A case against the actress and her mother Dina, who was reportedly with her at the time of the accident in March 13 has already been filed, media reports say.

Marc Mauser, Arnold?s lawyer, said that his client has suffered injuries in the left and right knees and is still under medication treatment. He further said that Arnold was asking for unspecific monetary damages to suffice his unpaid work days and for the pain he was suffering.

The lawyer of the Lohans, however, was not immediately available for comment so his reactions on the case were not raised.

The NYC photographer claimed the Lohans were reckless with the vehicle.

The lawsuit which was filed last week in Bronx County Supreme Court states that the BMW was owned by Lindsay’s mother, Dina, and that the 20-year-old singer/actress was driving it with her permission.

Arnold was reportedly among the several photographers chasing Lindsay Lohan to the Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District. Lohan was reportedly coming from a nightclub when the incident occurred.

Lohan reportedly told the New York Post two months ago that one of the shutterbugs jumped on the hood of her car. This knocked Arnold down accidentally.

But according to Mauser, his client?s vehicle was not in motion, and he was just going to take a picture. Arnold was in front of the BMW when Lohan put it in reverse and then she drove. Her action threw him on the hood and so he fell on the ground. He added that the actress stopped for awhile to check on Arnold before leaving.

The Lohans were given 30 days to respond to the lawsuit.

Looks like this incident will give Lindsay Lohan a lesson before she reaches 21 on July 2.

Meanwhile, BMW, maker of quality BMW muffler, isn?t affected at all by incident. BMW cars remain a popular choice of car both to young and old alike.

Honda to Build New Plants in Thailand and Argentina

8 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Honda Automobile Thailand Co. Ltd., Honda?s automobile production and sales subsidiary in Thailand has announced recently that it has started the construction of its second auto plant as it sees further growth in demand for automobiles in Thailand and in other market in Asia/Oceania region.

The second plant was constructed adjacent to the existing plant and is scheduled to start mass production in the later part of 2008. The annual production capacity of the new plant will reach up to 120,000 units in the future and will create an additional 2,200 jobs. Combining the production capacity of the new plant with that of the production of 120,000 units of existing plant will produce a total of 240,000 units annually. Honda the producer of Honda muffler has invested around 6.2 billion baht or 23 billion yen on the new plant.

The new Honda plant in Thailand will be an eco-friendly facility equipped with a ?complete water recycling system? with zero emissions of industrial water, and water-based paint with minimal VOC or volatile organic compounds emissions. It will also be equipped with solar cell panels that will help in reducing CO2 emissions by 10 percent.

Honda will also continue in amplifying the quality of its operations in Thailand and in the process further strengthening the business foundation in other markets in the Asia/Oceania region.

Honda to Invest in New Car Plant in Argentina

The Japanese automaker has invested $100 million on the new plant which was constructed primarily for the production of compact passenger cars, according to the announcement made by newly appointed Economy Minister Miguel Peirano.

The new Honda Argentina plant will create an additional 800 jobs and will have an annual output of 30,000 cars that are destined for both local and Latin American market.

In a press conference, Honda Motor Director General Leandro Risso said that the construction of the new plant will begin in September but actual production will start in 2009.

17 Goes 25 With Subaru

7 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Japanese automaker Subaru recently honored seventeen of its dealerships in the United States for their 25 years of marketing Subaru vehicles in the country. The celebration for the 25th anniversary of the seventeen dealerships was held at the Subaru National Business Conference in Las Vegas.

These dealerships are keys to the automaker?s expansion in the United States. With Asian automakers gaining momentum over American automakers in the country, Subaru is in a position to become a major threat to other automakers in the market. With the help of their dealerships, the Japanese carmaking firm is reaching out to more consumers.

Tim Colbeck, the vice president of sales for Subaru of America, congratulated the dealerships saying: ?On behalf of Subaru of America, I’d like to congratulate our twenty-fifth anniversary dealers. We appreciate the commitment and investment that our dealers have made in the Subaru brand over the years, and we know that they will continue to lead the charge in enabling us to reach new levels of success.?

The seventeen dealerships recognized at the event have been marketing Subaru vehicles for more than two decades. The Japanese automaker is known for its use of boxer engines and all wheel drive powertrains. Boxer engines are flat engines with the pistons positioned horizontally and reciprocating in opposite directions. The name of the engine came from this arrangement as the pistons are said to akin to a boxer?s punching motions.

Aside from that, the Japanese automaker is also known for the use of all-wheel drive configurations. With the use of this technology, stability, handling and traction of their vehicles are known the world over. The Japanese firm uses this expertise in motorsports as they have entries in the World Rally Championship. For conventional drivers, the use of all-wheel drive system is very much welcomed by performance enthusiasts.

Reliability is also a trademark for Subaru. With auto parts such as Subaru mufflers, drivetrain components, transmission and other system components designed for a long life, Subaru vehicles have become known as reliable cars.

All these attributes are what the seventeen and other Subaru dealerships are using to attract consumers. Although not as popular as other Japanese carmakers such as Toyota and Honda, Subaru is slowly becoming a major force in the United States auto market with the help of the seventeen dealerships.

The Earthtimes reported that the seventeen Subaru dealerships celebrating their 25th anniversary are: Lamb Subaru, Prescott, Ariz.; Downtown Subaru, Oakland, Calif.; Schaller Subaru, Middletown, Conn.; Classic Subaru, Atlanta, Ga.; Subaru of Countryside, Countryside, Ill.; Tom Wood Subaru, Indianapolis, Ind.; Dwyer & Sons Subaru, Commerce Twp., Mich.; Clements Subaru, Rochester, Minn.; Jim Armstrong Subaru, Hickory, N.C.; Lynnes Subaru, Bloomfield, N.J.; Miller Subaru, Lumberton, N.J.; Stocker Subaru, State College, Penn.; LaRiche Subaru, Findlay, Ohio; Gentry Subaru, Ontario, Ore.; Hanson Subaru, Olympia, Wash.; Roy Robinson Subaru, Marysville, Wash.; and Dahl Subaru, La Crosse, Wis.

These dealerships have been with the company for a quarter of a century and with their efforts being appreciated by Subaru, it looks as if the relationship between automaker and auto dealers is going well.

These seventeen dealerships along with other Subaru dealerships will soon be marketing the newest models of Subaru vehicles. Included in the lineup of the Japanese automaker for the 2008 model year is the refined Legacy. The Subaru Outback will also be hitting showrooms soon. The legendary Subaru Impreza and its WRX have also been upgraded for the new model year.

Volvo to Outsource Auto Components From India

7 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

Volvo Car Corporation Sweden has recently announced that it will outsource components worth $99 million from India this year.

Volvo is joining other international automakers such as General Motors Corporation and DaimlerChrysler AG which both have employed the same outsourcing programmes for components that they used in manufacturing their vehicles.

Volvo Car Corporation, the producer of top of the line auto parts like Volvo muffler, is part of the Premier Automotive Group and one of the luxury brands currently owned by Ford Motor Company. According to Mr. Paul De Voijs, Managing Director, Volvo Cars India, the US head office of Volvo has been outsourcing components from major Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies like Minda HUF, Visteon, Arvin Meritor, Sundaram Clayton, and Rico Auto.

These major auto sources also obtain their critical components from India starting with the engine parts and making up nearly a third of all exports. Meanwhile other parts such as steering parts, body chassis, suspension and braking parts, equipment, electric parts, and other components make up for the remaining percentage of the automotive exports.

The demands for these automotive parts are growing. As a matter of fact it is projected that the industry will be having exports jumping from $1.8 billion in 2004-2005 to $5.9 billion in 2008-2009.

And according to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India more than a third or 36 percent of Indian auto component exports are heading for Europe with North America closing in at second place with 26 percent.

Volvo just like the rest of other major automakers will tap onto the growing automotive industry in India which is not only known for its high quality but also its frugal engineering.

The ability to offer quality products at prices that can compete globally has led to a CAGR of 20 percent from 2000-2005. It was also in the year 2005 when the auto components industry was valued at over $10 billion and expected to double every four years to reach $18.7 billion in 2009 and $40 billion by 2014.

Volvo Trucks Deliveries Down

In other Volvo news, this time with regards to Volvo Trucks North America—it has obtained a 62 percent decrease in deliveries of new trucks this year. Through August the truck deliveries to dealers and customers only reach 9,082 units down from 24,197 trucks obtained during the first eight months of 2006.

Truck deliveries do not exactly equal sales and according to Volvo officials they are expecting for their US truck sales to further decline this year. The dealers and trucking companies purchased a high number of trucks last year to counter the high emissions standards that took effect last January 1.

September Sales, Plunging for Ford and Flat for Gm

7 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

September was a tough month for the auto industry relative to the weak housing market and sloping consumer confidence, according to U.S sales figures published on Tuesday. The condition was helped by automakers like General Motors, Honda and Nissan which have successfully released their new vehicles.

Ford Motor Co. significantly dropped in their sales by 21 percent for the month. The 62 percent reductions in sales to rental car companies have contributed largely to the plunging sales of the automaker.

The sales of Toyota Motor Corp. also fell by four percent but still, the Japanese automaker managed to run ahead of Ford for the month and also for the January-September period. Toyota is well on its way of replacing Ford as the nation?s second automaker after GM. At the end of September, Toyota managed to sell 28,654 vehicles more than Ford did.

On the other hand, Chrysler LLC?s sales also declined by five percent.

According to a report released by Autodata Corp, U.S. overall auto sales were down by three percent from last September.

For GM, after undergoing a two-day strike and a month of intense labor negotiations with the United Auto Workers union, its sales were flat from last September. The strike caused 30,000 fewer vehicles from GM (maker of top of the line parts like Saab muffler). According to GM?s top sales analyst, Paul Ballew, the lay-off of the workers did not have any impact on GM?s sales and the company?s production schedule remained the same.

The Federal Reserve?s interest rate cut done in the mid of September did not pose any immediate impact on the sales in the auto industry. However, it calmed the auto market and it guaranteed that the constricting mortgage market won?t cause any effect to automotive credit.

“For us as an industry, we support and applaud the Fed’s move because we cannot have the spillover effects into other categories,” Ballew said.

Ballew added that continuing increase in energy prices and sloping of important markets like what?s happening in California and Florida will continuously have negative impacts to the automotive industry until the fourth quarter of the year.

For Erich Merkle, vice-president of auto industry for IRN Inc. it will take months for the rate to drop off to the average consumer.

“These are pretty weak numbers and this is indicative of the overall weakness we’ve seen in the economy,” Merkle said.

The sales of GM declined by four percent but its truck sales increased by four percent thanks to its Chevrolet Silverado and its other new pick-ups. The Buick Enclave, Cadillac CTS and the other new crossovers posted an increase of 73 percent in their sales for September.

For Ford Motor Co, its car sales fell by 39 percent from last September and its truck sales also declined by fiver percent. The best selling Ford F-150 lost its appeal as Toyota and GM introduced new pick-ups. The sales of the F-150 fell by 21 percent.

According to George Pipa, Ford?s top sales analyst, the company is cutting its sales to daily rental fleets by more than 30 percent or 135,000 vehicles. With Chrysler and GM, Ford had been cutting rental sales causing decline in profits and hurting brand image.

Meanwhile Edmunds.com reports that Chrysler?s car sales increased by 18 percent drawing from its introduction of the new redesigned Sebring. The truck sales declined by 11 percent despite the incentives offered together with the vehicle.

For Toyota, its car sales were down by four percent but its biggest sales decline is on its truck segment by six percent. According to the automaker, the figures were compared with their best-ever September 2006.

“We’re confident the next few months will keep us on track to reach our growth targets,” says Irv Miller, Toyota?s spokesman.

Over all sales for Honda Motor Co. in the U.S shot up by nine percent. Honda?s car sales increased by seven percent and its truck sales by 13 percent for the month.

Nissan with its redesigned Altima sedan and new Rogue crossover gained seven percent. Car sales were up by 17 percent and truck sales falling by six percent.

Vw Says Safety Has Priority

7 December 2009 | No Comments » | admin

On the fourth of this month, Dakar Rally organizer Amaury Sport Organization officially announced that the rally will not be held due to the significant safety concerns divulged by the French Government in connection with the stages in Mauritania.

After different exchanges with the French government particularly the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the organizers of the Dakar decided to cancel this year?s edition of the rally, which is set from the 5th to the 20th of January between Lisbon and Senegal?s capital.

Based on the current international political tension and the murder of four French tourists last 24th of December linked to a branch of Al-Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb and also and mainly the direct threats launched directly against the race by terrorist organizations, no other decision but the cancellation of the sporting event could be taken by A.S.O, according to a Dakar release.

“It is with great regret that Volkswagen acknowledges the cancellation of the 30th Dakar Rally,” said a release following the announcement a day prior to the scheduled start of the endurance classic. “The safety of every single participant has absolute priority and for this reason Volkswagen completely and utterly endorses the decision made by the organizers ASO to cancel the start of the Dakar Rally originally scheduled for 5 January,” said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, a Board Member with the responsibility for Technical Development at Volkswagen.

“We are obviously very unhappy about the cancellation, since we prepared for this rally for an entire year and were extremely well equipped for this sporting challenge,” he told SuperSport.

It seems that the Volkswagen muffler will be taking a short rest in Dakar. “We fully respect the decision for safety purposes, which also have absolute priority for us. The cancellation is a great disappointment for every member of the Volkswagen Motorsport team, particularly as everybody was looking forward to starting this fair sporting competition,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen.

Dakar should have finished, as is tradition, after 15 stages and about 9,300 kilometers in the Senegalese capital city. The supposedly 30th edition of the race would involve over 550 car, truck and bike drivers.

Last year, 300 of 490 entrants reached the finish line after crossing deserts, scrubland and savannas. The notorious toughness was highlighted in 2007 by the deaths of French rider Eric Aubijoux, who suffered a heart attack during an untimed section near Dakar, and South African motorcyclist Elmer Symons who died in a crash during the fourth stage in Morocco, reported The Canadian Press.

The rally has other fears. France’s government cautioned organizers Thursday to avoid Mauritania after four French family members were killed, while picnicking on a holiday there.

In a statement, rally organizers said that they had taken France’s warning into account, adding they had also received guarantees from the Mauritanian government.
