Edge Performance Chips and the History to Their Control Modules

16 January 2010 | No Comments » | admin

As the name states, Edge can give your diesel and extra edge over competition on the highway, in the streets and on your block. Extra horsepower, torque and mileage have been the driving force for the Edge brand since they started business, where outdoing the other guys making diesel performance parts is a top priority.

Hailing from the diesel truck haven of Ogden, Utah, Edge?s beehive of performance churns out some of the latest and greatest parts on a daily basis. From steady modules like the EZ to advanced monitors like the A2 with integrated GPS, Edge has been changing diesel trucks one product at a time. Team an Edge performance module with one of their high-tech monitors, and you get very real power gains that you can see and feel.

Edge makes sure that your truck not only gets thundering horsepower, grunting torque and relieving fuel economy gains, but that your ride quality is never sacrificed. Smooth fuel curves and shift points are a part of every Edge product. EGTs stay tame, boost pressure is optimized and timing is always in-step when you give your truck an Edge.

And the best place to get that Edge is by shopping online at the various performance part and accessories online shops that carry Edge. Many online sites stock the full lineup of Edge performance-boosting parts for your rig, and some offer them at already discounted prices that brick and mortar shops can’t offer.

I Found a few User Reviews about Edge Performance Chips and Control Modules:

“Brought the Edge Attitude Monitor to complete my addition of a controller after my installation of a Juice module. Originally intended to purchase the Edge Attitude A2 Monitor with GPS and backup camera, but decided that an independent GPS unit with an extra wiring harness and receiver would allow me the GPS utility in two vehicles. Love the easy of changing power levels as needed to meet my driving and towing needs. Really like the automatic defuelling as the EGT raises to the set point, because I was continually looking at my EGT temperature guage and speeding up and slowing down as needed to keep the EGT in a safe range. Really impressed with all of the extra other features available to me also.”

“I had the Edge Juice for about 3 months and adding the attitude makes it so easy make adjustments and the engine monitoring display gives me more comfort in letting me know the motor isn’t being over stressed.”

“If all the products advertised on E Bay worked as well as this one does, it would truly make shopping fun.I installed the product on my 2001 Dodge Deisel and was truly amazed at the difference it made. I felt as though I had a new truck, it pulls so much better, fuel mileage has increased, and again I say, it’s great.”

“I ordered the Edge Performance Chips for my 02 Ford F250. It was delivered promptly. The instructions were a little confusing. I called Edge Tech. Support and they were very helpful. In 5 minutes, it was installed. I have only used it on the default setting, and it added more power. I was hoping for a little better fuel savings. It did help save on fuel around town, but freeway driving did not seem to make much difference. I noticed my check engine light came on a couple of times when I accellerated quickly passing another vehicle. I don’t know why it came on, it had not done that before, but it went back off in a couple of minutes. I don’t know if it was related to the performance module or not. Overall, I liked the Edge product and wish I would have ordered on sooner.”

Subaru Performance Transmission Upgrades

16 January 2010 | No Comments » | admin

There is probably a transmission shop in almost every town in the country that can build a bulletproof transmission for American made vehicles. Whether it is a late model Mustang or a 60’s Chevelle, there are lots of aftermarket components and many years of technology available for the transmission rebuilder to utilize.

The same cannot be said for the 4EAT automatic transmissions found in Subaru vehicles. In factory form, these transmissions demonstrate several problem areas that can cause failure in as little as 20,000 miles with a stock engine and even sooner in modified applications.

Poor shift quality, anemic factory components, and above all, improperly configured torque converters plague the automatic transmission equipped vehicle. This is in conjunction with the automatic’s propensity to burn out the high clutch pack (third gear) and the 2-4 clutches (second and fourth gear) with even moderate increases in engine output.

Realizing the need to take import and sport compact automatics to their fullest potential, IPT Performance Transmissions- a New Jersey based company, committed a large portion of their research time and dollars toward improving the Subaru automatic transmission.

First up on the hit parade of internal modifications is the need to address the issue of valve body calibration. The valve body mods are really the foundation of any performance trans rebuild. An automatic transmission utilizes a network of valves, servos, solenoids, orifices, accumulators and passages that control and route hydraulic pressure to the appropriate places to apply the clutches and bands.

Without going into elaborate detail which would fall outside the scope of this article, suffice it to say that modifying the valve body effectively changes the rate of clutch apply and also increases the clamping force with which these components have to work with. This is why shift kits and modified valve bodies produce that firm, performance type shift that increases the transmission’s overall capacity for power handling.

Next, all critical support bushings need to be replaced to insure that the centerline of the transmission runs in perfect alignment with the centerline of the crankshaft. Ignoring this step puts a lot of undue stress on the internal transmission components.

Many of the other parts also such as the pinion shaft, the front differential ring gear and the planetary gearset undergo various metallurgical processes such as heat treating, Meta-Lax stress relieving, and cryogenic treatment (freezing them in liquid nitrogen at -300 degrees Fahrenheit to ‘reset’ the part’s structure on the molecular level).

Lastly, all of the required seals and gaskets are changed to materials that are better able to cope with the heat and stress that is common in high powered applications. Performance clutches and steel reaction plates are installed and their clearances set to much more exacting specifications than those that are used by the factory. Most importantly, IPT utilizes a proprietary six disk high clutch pack and a five disk 2-4 clutch pack which increases the second, third, and fourth gear torque capacity by over 25% versus the factory set up- this is the key to getting a high powered vehicle make a 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shift instead of just bouncing off the rev limiter.

As for the modifications outside of the gearbox, the next thing of importance is of course the torque converter. In an automatic equipped vehicle, one of the most important components in the entire car in regards to optimizing performance is a correctly configured converter.

In addition to being made with many strength improvements over the factory piece, a performance converter enables a vehicle to better take advantage of the RPM range at which maximum power is made. In simple terms, a properly designed converter will allow a vehicle to launch under more power by increasing the rpm at which the launch takes place. In essence, a torque converter is an infinitely variable transmission in and of itself, and altering its torque multiplying characteristics becomes absolutely necessary when other variables in the vehicle are changed (bigger turbos and bigger cams).

Even in otherwise stock turbocharged Subaru vehicles, ET reductions of over one full second are not at all uncommon with the addition of a properly configured converter.

Transmission, torque converter and valve body upgrades are not only for American made vehicles anymore. Increased performance, durability and more efficient shifting is now available for the vehicles of almost every manufacturer- thanks in part to the few companies that are willing to do the research and development work required for this rapidly growing segment of the automotive aftermarket.

Whether street racing, drag racing, or track racing, one thing is for sure – the winners know they need the best performance race car parts as part of their winning strategy. As part of the massive auto racing sport industry, the race car parts companies that design, build, and continue pushing the limits of what was previously possible, are as essential to the street and the sport as the race car drivers are themselves.

For starters, many beginners in racing decide to begin their hobbies with a stock, off the street, automobile and add performance-tuned race car parts from there. This is a fantastic way to get going in racing. Whether just seeking enhanced street performance or thinking about taking a car to the track, a few simple modifications can take even a standard stock-model vehicle to a whole new level.

For example, one of the most popular race car part inspired performance boosting accessories for almost any type of car is the cold air intake and easy-breathing air filter. An add on that generally takes just an hour or two for the shade tree mechanic to install, a cold air intake is an easy way to score 5 to 10 extra horsepower with ease (and better gas mileage too).

Other popular racing parts that are popular among high performance street automobile enthusiasts include performance enhancing engine control computer chips, race ready lightweight engine components, low flow exhaust systems (from the catalytic converter and back, also known as “catback,” for remaining street legal), and of course cross-drilled brake discs to help the car stop as quickly as it goes. Common accessory body components such as body kits and rear spoilers are inspired by race car parts that improve aerodynamics and stability.

Beyond enhancing street performance, when a racer is really serious about racing, there are certain race car parts that are not only essential, but also required by official sanctioned rules and regulations. This is where on-track racing really starts to get pricy.

Safety race car parts like roll cages and fuel cells go hand in hand with serious racing. The bottom line is clear – they’re just a required part of playing the game. Beginners to auto sports would be wise to understand this from the very beginning as they build their garage full of race car parts and equipment.

When it comes down to it, a variety of race car parts are part of the performance-minded automotive enthusiast’s arsenal. It doesn’t matter if a car will never exceed the speed limit or if it’s the record breaking top fuel dragster, cutting-edge race car parts are an essential part of the winning car strategy – from improving fuel economy to winning serious races.

12 January 2010 | No Comments » | admin

For an Acura to really stand out, it must first perform at its best. To achieve this, engine power must be increased — a task done electronically by the Acura performance chip. Also known as a power programmer or a performance programmer, the performance chip optimizes a vehicle’s fuel and ignition system to extract the maximum amount of horsepower and torque possible. It replaces the car’s standard engine control unit (ECU) chip, which is responsible for managing the internal combustion engine’s operations.

An Acura performance chip consists of lookup tables that contain fuel rate values. These values are increased according to a particular driving condition, resulting to a maximized engine performance. Normally, an Acura performance chip is situated inside a car body’s interior, where it is heavily protected from the different elements. Most performance chips, however, can be accessed through the passenger?s side glove compartment. Others are at the passenger?s side front door.

An Acura performance chip works by integrating the functions of the old-time tuners onto a single computer chip, virtually re-programming an engine system to offer increased power and higher torque. It is designed to improve the fuel/air ratio and spark map in engines to deliver the exact the demands of vehicle owner. Other benefits include greater fuel mileage, and impressively clean emissions, alongwith an engine operating at its full potential. Acura performance chips can also raise fuel injection’ efficiency, eliminate speed limiters, increase torque, calibrate the speedometer, adjust ignition timing, reset shift points, tweak shift firmness, and check diagnostic codes.

Installation of an Acura performance chip is not assiduous since all the needed tools and information are available both online and in the market. Getting an Acura performance chip is indeed, an easy and excellent way to boost automotive operation and performance.
